What’s the Difference Between a Windshield Chip vs. Crack And does it mean I need a windshield repair or replacement?

Writer's picture: Enrique OvallesEnrique Ovalles

Minor windshield damage typically presents itself in two primary ways – as chips or cracks. A rock chip refers to damage on the windshield caused by debris hitting it, leaving a distinctive point of impact. This impact can manifest as a star break (short cracks radiating from the center), a bulls-eye (circular shape), a partial bulls-eye (half-moon shape), a crack chip (a small crack less than 1 inch in size), or a pit (a gouge).

Cracks in the glass form a clear line that can vary in width from less than an inch to the entire width of your windshield. Typically, these cracks extend horizontally in a straight or slightly wavy pattern. In some cases, even lengthy cracks in a windshield can be fixed.

Is it possible to repair your chipped or cracked auto glass?

It's important to note that this information specifically pertains to windshields, which are constructed using laminated glass. In contrast, most side and back windows typically require complete replacement as they are made from tempered glass, which is not repairable.

The potential for repairing your windshield hinges on three key factors: size, depth, and location. Generally, larger and deeper cracks that reach the edges of the windshield are more likely to necessitate replacement, while small, superficial chips further from the edges may be repairable. If you are uncertain about whether your vehicle is eligible for repair, seek advice from a professional.
